In Indonesia, often translated as negara hukum. In fact, rule of law is term from the common law tradition which differs from its civil law tradition equivalent - Rechtsstaat (state ruled by law). Both require procedural fairness, due process and equality before the law but the rule of law also usually implies separation of powers, certain human rights protections and often democratisation.

Recently, rule of law and negara hukum have begun to converge and the differences between them are becoming less clear.
